October 2009
’T is but the Autumn’s chilly sun
That mocks the glow of May;
’T is but the pallid bindweeds run
Across our garden way,
Pale orchids, scentless every one,
Ghosts of the summer day.
- From “Love’s Autumn” by John Payne (b. 1842)
So this is October. My favorite month. Why am I not more excited it’s here? I need to go for a walk in the woods.
- First of all, a correction. Scott Newcomer will be running for re-election, for whatever reason. I could have swore the article said he wasn’t running, but perhaps that was wishful thinking. My error was partially due to the fact that I know longer give a hoot. Mr. Newcomer has my apologies for the error, if he wants them.

- Dear Waukesha Common Council:
No one has offered a good reason why the salary for the mayor’s position should be raised 16% over the next 3 years, other than the lame “mayors of cities of comparable size get more”, which your mother will shoot down in a second. $70,000 is a lot of money now and it will be a lot of money 3 years from now, for that job. No one puts a gun to your head and makes you run for mayor. Put an end to the speculation and freeze the salary.
