Friday Morning Dispatches

Today is the last day of the rest of this driveway’s life. For some reason, it looks worse in a photograph than I see when I look at the driveway. Is that because a photo is objective and I am not? Probably. Anyway, a pack of wolves is scheduled to come dig it out today and bring gravel to replace it. Then the asphalt will follow at a future date. The more I look at this, the more I think $3500 to dig it out and replace it is a pretty good deal.
- The big question for me today: how does a bell get damaged in a fire to the point it doesn’t work any more?
- The Freeman sets a record for the absolutely worst caricature of all time. The editorial’s not bad, though.
- This is getting ridiculous. Look at page 3 of today’s Freeman: Not one, not two, not three but four men charged with sex offenses.
- You would think we were in the midst of the Great Depression. It’s just greed, pure and simple.
- One of things which disappointed me about W’s presidency is that he never reigned in the EPA.
- Stevens Point was named as the 6th best best place to live by Relocate America. Appleton was the only other Wisconsin city listed in the top 100. I’m sure Waukesha was simply overlooked.
- Next year, with all the fine dining coming to downtown, I’m sure we’ll make the list. I still miss the Doughnut Shoppe.
- The Freeman couldn’t contact the new owners of the downtown bar currently called “Main Stage” but Darryl has the scoop.
- The WCTC Board chairman says that a $2,000,000 tax increase is “modest” and “reasonable”. I’m in the process of contacting local government officials to see if they think that this increase is modest and reasonable as well. The unelected board is looking at their budget in a vacuum. It’s not a moderate or reasonable increase when you consider that the Elmbrook school district just passed a big referendum on their tax payers, the Waukesha school district is talking about a referendum for their tax payers, the City of Waukesha has a $2,000,000 deficit looming, the State of Wisconsin has their budget mess, tax payers are paying $4 per gallon for gas and food prices just shot up by the largest percentage in 15 years. One wonders if WCTC really has cut out all the fat in their budget when their class offerings include:
091-478 Alt Therapies for the Horse
A comprehensive course discussing and demonstrating chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure, chinese herb therapy, and massage therapy as used in the horse.
-and-
109-406 Wine - Unlocking the Mystique
Through lecture, discussion, and limited tasting, learn to enjoy wine through the knowledge of history and geography, and the senses of smell and taste. Student must bring the required course manual (available at the WCTC Bookstore) and three wine glasses to class.
- If you click on the president’s name, you can send her an e-mail to respectfully ask her to consider all that’s going on around her institution when she is preparing her institution’s next budget.
- I think I hear trucks.

(Sorry Huck, I stuck my comments to the wrong post… here I try again…
“$3500 to dig it out and replace it is a pretty good deal.” - Yup. While it’s always cheaper to do it yourself…if you have the time, 35’s a very good price. (bug them about “pitch”, ask them how they check to make sure the water wont flow into your basement. Ask them how much “pitch” per foot they put in, that way they’ll know you have a clue, and they’ll have to spend a little time doing it right. (And if you crop that pic a little, it looks as calming as a Japanese stone garden.)

Let me tell you, that driveway is NOT as calming as a Zen Garden to DRIVE in! See that canyon on the right? I used to have to gun my car full trottle to get out of it, then stomp on the brake so I didn’t go crashing into the garage, or zooming in to the street!
