Today’s header is from the Silurian Spring behind the YMCA:

The plaque says “Recognized By The Indians For Its Health Benefits”. Indians didn’t have an EPA. “Famous Internationally Since 1865. Reactivated June 14, 1953 by Waukesha Jaycees. Co-Sponsors: Fox Head Brewing Co., Weber Waukesha Brewing Co.”

There used to be casino, not run by Indians, at this location. This is a view of the spring house with the casino in the background:

Nothing says good driving like a big bottle of Canadian Club.

  • More on the most recent accident involving Waukesha West students. A billion traffic lights (like those on Barstow Street) will not save people from poor judgement.
  • The accident at the Fox River sounds a lot more complicated than I originally thought. I’m expecting a call for more traffic lights on the corners of Madison and Clinton Streets.
  • Allison Bussler’s boss … um … you know who I mean … Paul’s kid … anyway, he’s supporting a bill (at Allison’s urging, no doubt) which would take insurance benefits out of collective bargaining with the the evil teachers union, for one.
  • scales.jpg
  • Human beings like balance in life. I can understand why the family would want something to compensate them for the loss of their loved one. That doesn’t make this decision fair, the deputy was just doing his job.
  • Same thing in this case. The truck driver was just trying to make a living. He wasn’t impaired, he was just trying to do his job. But our society demands balance.
  • So with that being said, what’s the balancing penalty for one of the world’s biggest spammers? I think water boarding would be appropriate.
  • Goldmans Department Store is closing. It’s some place I always intended to visit, but never did. It still makes a profit, according to its owners. Maybe someone will see that and buy the place.
  • Diamond Jim Doyle wants to increase spending on the UW system by $225,000,000.00. Guess where he’s going to get the money.
  • Junior McGee’s lawyers are proposing the ebonics defense for their client.
  • The price of milk is set to skyrocket. I look at it the same way as I look at the Indian casinos: both are owed some good times to balance past bad ones. Balance is the theme for the day.
  • Big changes at Landmark Credit Union are in the offing. I hope their ATMs remain no-fee.
  • Lastly, Wigderson sees his friends on the left are depressed. It’s because we’re not yet living in the socialist workers paradise of Clintonistan or Obamarama, James.

Or Cudahy Packer Iris or Los Angeles Laker Iris

Another car accident with injuries involving Waukesha West students occurred at Hwy 59 and Oakdale Drive. Here’s hoping the injuries are not serious. The intersection has a stop light.

katavinchy-800.jpg

Katavinchy’s is closing at the Five Points. Nice stuff, but not my style. Or, more likely, lack thereof.

surplus-800.jpg

The Surplus Outlet is closing to make room for the newe hotelle. It says they’re moving. I wonder where? I liked that place. More my style.

rooming-house-800.jpg

The building on St. Paul Avenue destroyed by a fire in which a man died is being rebuilt. Looks like retail on the bottom, hopefully not another bar, rooms/apartments upstairs.

car_in_fox1.jpg Darryl Enriquez was on the scene after a woman drove her car into the Fox River. Good job, as always, Darryl.

Commenter Rick Sha let me know that Curt Otto was there too! Nice to hear from Curt.

books.jpgGosh, I slept well last night. Whether it was the fact that the Brewers finally won a game or the splendid coolness of my air-conditioned bedroom, I cannot say. I’m off for the library this morning to find a Raymond Chandler book. I know they’ve got a collection of his pulp stories and that should be ok.

As I’ve told you before, I don’t read one book until I’m finished and then move on to the next book. I read multiple books at the same time, switching from one to the next as the spirit moves me. Okay, not at the same time, that would be impossible. Concurrently, would be a better word. It’s the literary equivalent of surfing TV channels with the remote. I’m currently reading “Marley and Me“, “Red Rabbit“, “An Isolated Incident” and “Weird U.S.“. I’ve also been trying to read a collection of spiritual views on a multitude of subjects from diverse religions called “World Scripture“. It’s all starting to sound like so much blah-blah, so it’s time to read about the muzzle of a Luger that looked like the Second Street Tunnel.

  • A curious and, I hope, not coincidental juxtaposition of stories concerning two educators in this morning’s Freeman. First, the Waukesha school district hires a principal who admitted no wrong-doing in a sexual harassment case and had recommendations from his superiors, but who had resigned from his previous job.
  • Second, an assistant principal in Pewaukee who wanted to admit no wrong-doing in a DWI case and wanted recommendations from her superiors in return for her resignation. Hmm.
  • Mark Belling calls out state Rep. Susan Jeskewitz of Menomonee Falls and basically calls her her a RINO.
  • Alderwoman Peggy Bull of Waukesha doesn’t want a Super WalMart or a Super Target in Waukesha because they’re super-sized. Never mind the jobs they create or the tax money the city would receive. Gotta save that swamp land.

Forget the Junior McGee story, this is the big crime news. What a sleeze.

If you’re wondering where the mosquitoes are, they traditionally come out for the St. John Neumann festival. Chicken, sweet corn, El Rey, what’s not to like?

  • Perhaps the mosquitoes will be replaced by cicadas.
  • Hot summers and cicadas are the things I remember the most about my Dad’s home town in Southern Illinois. If I move out of Wisconsin, I may go back there. I’ve neglected that side of my family.
  • What did you do for Memorial Day? I missed the parade because I was watching “Band of Brothers” again. Just the opening theme song chokes me up. Watched the Brewers lose again. I took my WW II Navy veteran mother out to lunch. Kind of a disappointing day because she always liked holidays with a lot of family around.
  • This used book dealer had a book burning because he couldn’t even give books away. I give books away. Fiction, anyway. If the library won’t take them, how about schools, hospitals, churches, nursing homes, senior residences, jails?
  • After all, Mike McGee, Jr might need some reading material in the Big House. Lordy, he is in a heap o’ trouble. The Badger Blogger is the best place to look for continuing coverage on this issue.
  • The other bonehead of the day is the robber in Milwaukee who asked his victim out.
  • The price of milk is up. Now if they could only convert it to ethanol.
  • The City of Waukesha is offering barbeque classes. These must be for women because men are born with the ability to barbeque.
  • This is a tease: new pictures coming soon to the Chronicle.

This is a search item which found my blog. In response to this request, I bring you the lyrics of the song “Dear Boss” by the Clancy Brothers:

Dear Boss I write this note to you to tell you of my plight
And at the time of writing I am not a pretty sight
Me body is all black and blue and me face a deadly gray
And I hope you’ll understand why Paddy’s not at work today

I was workin’ on the 14th floor; some bricks I had to clear
And throwin’ ‘em down from such a height was not a good idea
The foreman wasn’t very pleased, he bein’ an awful sod
And he said I’d have to take them down the ladder in me hod

Now shiftin’ all those bricks by hand it seemed so awful slow
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured a rope below
But in my haste to do the job I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of buildin’ bricks was heaveier than me

Now when I came down I cut the rope and the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
I shot up like a rocket and to my dismay I found
That halfways up I met the bloody barrel comin’ down

Now the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped
And when I reached the top I struck the pulley with me head
I still clung on though numbed and shocked from this almighty blow
And the barrel spilled out half the bricks 14 floors below

Now when the bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and I started down once more
Still clinging tightly to the rope I headed for the ground
And I fell among the broken bricks that were all scatter’d ’round

As I lay there moaning on the floor sure I thought I’d passed the worst
Then the barrel struck the pulley wheel and didn’t the bottom burst
A shower of bricks came down on me sure I haven’t got a hope
And as I was losing consciousness… I let go the bloody rope

Now the barrel it being heavier it started down once more
And it landed right across me as I lay there on the floor
I broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say
That I hope you’ll understand why Paddy’s not at work today
