What On Earth Is Wrong With People?
February 17, 2007
Would you want your children to read a book with “scrotum” on the first page? And of course it wins the Newberry Award. There appears to a large subset of the American culture who wants to take childhood away from children, to turn every child into pageant-ready Jon Benet or Mouseketeer Britney. Not coincidentally, the author of the book is from California. Do they understand anything out there?

When did “scrotum” become a dirty word?
Adults are the ones who make these terms taboo for children.
On the other hand, I am sure there are MANY other literary works out there that could have been chosen for this award that do NOT have the word “scrotum” ANYWHERE in there text.
The world is decaying.
It’s not dirty, it’s a biological term. However, it is inappropriate to use biological terms associated with the sexual organs of mammals in a children’s book, for heaven’s sake. It’s been inappropriate since before the United States existed and it should be inappropriate now. It’s inappropriate to do sex education for fourth graders, it’s inappropriate for 12 year olds to be having sexual intercourse. But for some reason, adults began thinking nothing should be taboo and now it’s led to this.
Check out this post which has a link to an article which says that little girls are being sexualized at age five. Five.
